for one, it might keep away the teachers like I had in 1st grade that really just wanted to play with children all day.
For another, I feel like society is developing an EXPECTATION of teachers to behave like professionals and to have that degree of teaching skill. You might as well go the extra steps to appease that expectation.
I also wonder if teaching as a "profession" would lead to better teaching salaries. I don't think that's a reason to do it; I'm just curious about it.
