I mean unless 'castigation' had a medieval flare as opposed to generalized maternal nagging I think you could chalk this one up to a mother's general tendency to worry and feel her kids should absolutely update them on every detail of their life especially illness. I think most mother's consider themselves exempt from 'none of your business' and with some justification, a very diplomatic answer would generally be expected, or an apology just to save time. Can't really relate, I'm a notorious event horizon for family affairs, information comes in and never emerges so no one bothers to ask.
