On Cutting the Budget ... The_Muted_Grimaud Send a noteboard - 29/02/2012 06:31:17 PM
I'm posting a fox news article. John Stossel discussing how to cut the budget now, and how the only thing in the way is politics. He mentions in his article that projected deficits for the future (according to the CBO) are 768 billion (not this year) His list of cuts ...

Privatize Air Traffic Control
Privatize Amtrack and end subsidies for Rail
End Public Broadcasting subsidies,
End the Small Business Administration
Repeal Davis-Bacon laws (which requires paying union wages to federal construction workers)

All this combines for a 20 billion cut ... so ...

Cut the US Dep. of Education - 94 billion off,
Eliminate Agriculture subs.
Eliminate Housing and Urban Development - 53 billion more off ...
End the Energy Department (20 billion)
End the War on Drugs (47 billion)

(He states at this point that he's totaled 246 billion in cuts) so ...

Changing Social Security, raising retirement age could save 93 billion.
Cutting medicare and medicade ... he states taking 2/3rds of the cuts suggested by Cato Institute would equal 281$ billion.
Finally, doing something with the militaries 721 billion budget. (he mentions 150 billion in cuts, and implies that number from ending the current missions and withdrawing our troops from friendly nations (Germany, Japan, et al.)

And then poof, he says he's made a surplus of 2 billion. 246+93+281+150=770 billion in cuts.

What do you think of this list?
Balancing the budget.
