Indeed, the British press would never want to do that snoopcester Send a noteboard - 31/07/2012 07:59:04 PM
Or possibly they just don't think anyone cares about it, since it changes nothing about Cavendish not getting a medal. I did see his post-ride BBC interview, by the way, his disappointment and dejection was a side of Cavendish I for one haven't often seen...

I suspect it is more a sign of the ignorance of most British sports journalists about cycling.
I guess you've probably seen less interviews with Cavendish after not winning than we see over here - he does hit some serious lows, I doubt there are many sportsmen out there who take so much onto themselves and so obviously feel like they've let people down when they don't win.

Yeah. Dominant in a way that nobody in men's cycling could be - what with women's cycling being such a small sport in terms of funding and attention, there's just not enough room for enough riders to have a comparable level of competition. Jeannie Longo is only the most extreme example of that.

That is true, there is to some extent an element of being a big fish in a small pond that does help.

Well, the sale to Kolobnev only really was substantiated a year or more later as well, but one does suspect Vino would be smart enough to not leave such obvious financial traces this time, so yeah, guess we'll never know for sure. Either way, it's a sad spectacle, this guy who was once so widely respected, then smashed his own reputation to bits but still keeps riding because he's such good pals with the Kazach government. And a very sad gold medal winner.

It is a real shame he didn't retire when he first said he was going to, cycling really doesn't need people like him hanging around the sport... but I'd not be surprised to see him stay involved with Astana even once he does retire from rider.
