As I said, I watched NASA and not CNN, so I didn't get much of a WOO AMERICA vibe until I saw the later coverage. Thought that was a bit silly; I've always viewed space exploration as the demesne of humanity, not of nation-states.
On the other hand, I think what nationalism NASA put forward was done in a calculated attempt to get more funding. Their budgets have been slashed horribly in recent years.
Yes, I gathered that from how much weight they put on the fact that it this program had only cost each Amrican 7 dollars.
