I'm planning a trip to Edinburgh, probably in the last week of August if I can book a cheap flight. Otherwise I'll go in September. I'm doing this on my own and I've never been to the UK before. Why I decided on Edinburgh (instead of London or some other city in the UK) is pretty unclear, it just sounded like an interesting place based on my sister's recommendations.
So, I'm asking for tips: What is there to see/do in Edinburgh? Information on an affordable hotel/hostel would be really welcome, too, but that might be asking for too much.
The Edinburgh gay scene is something I think I have to check. And I love running and hiking.
But everything interests me so I'm open for all suggestions.

Well for hiking check out Holyrood Park.
Other stuff: A day on the the Royal Mile, The National Gallery, and Edinburgh Castle.
Your best bet is to do the Hop-on, Hop-off bus the first day. This gives you a good overview and gives you ideas of stuff to stop at. You can get a two day ticket and get on and off as much as you like.
I'd not limit myself to just Edinburgh and at least take a day trip to Stirling (Castle, Bridge, Wallace Monument).
Not sure what you mean by affordable but I stayed at the Novotel which was only okay, the staff were great but it did not really meet my expectations. The main benefit was that it was rather central.
