I would not put it THAT way. Joel Send a noteboard - 26/08/2012 02:35:49 AM
About 14 of them in accidents, car wrecks, etc, about 5 from suicide. A lot of those two sets of death involve guns, about 32k or 4 of the people dead this hour. Of those 4, the majority were suicides. Today, 7000 people will die, 92 of them by guns, and 55 of them will have killed themselves, so somewhere between 30-40 people will have been shot dead today, some others will be killed with knives, poison (more common than people think) and etc.

Your odds as a random citizen today:
1 in 100,000 you will be diagnosed with cancer
1 in 7.5 Million someone will kill you today
1 in 3 Million you will choose to kill yourself
1 in a million that you will die in a car wreck, accidental anything, etc.
1 in 1.5 Billion to be killed by lightning today

And of all of those, the last is closest to paralleling your odds of being involved in one of these spree shootings, mass murders, etc. We've got 2 dead including the shooter and that represents about 30 average minutes of of normal murder/suicide. You're about 1000 times more likely to die driving to work or some place then getting shot by some random maniac while there. Focusing in on these cases like this is not helpful, we probably have more people wreck their cars and die being stressed out or distracted by the news reports of these things then actually die at them.

Every death is a tragedy, doesn't mean they should be part of someone's strategy.

No, but they can certainly motivate a strategy, and if they become so routine people can dismiss them, they should. I do not think banning guns the RIGHT strategy, but ensuring those who get guns legally are safe to have them is, as are long sentences for those found to have them illegally. That reiterated, I think Aisha is over-reaching here (especially since, IIRC, the shooter in this case owned his gun illegally; not much legal remedy for that.)

That wasn't a mass shooting. That was a disgruntled coworker killing his boss - 24/08/2012 08:46:45 PM 509 Views

Funnily/Horribly enough, the additional casualties are apparently NOT from the original shooter... - 25/08/2012 12:32:36 AM 538 Views
