if they still have a remote chance of getting the ball back then yes what they did is legal and not unsportsmanlike, assuming they did it all within the established rules of the game. the only thing I can see written about the whole thing is that it was unsportsmanlike. this suggests to me that the only course of action left to a team trailing by one score late in the game is to just roll over and give up before the game officially ends.
