There are entire segments of the population who are in a dependency cycle who will not even consider voting for Romney because they look to Obama to just, well, give them more. 47% or not, Romney's point is that it's a waste of his time to try to pander to the people who just ask the government to help and nothing more, and under Obama those numbers have swelled.

Obama's policies don't really inspire much confidence, either. He says he wants to reduce unemployment, then implements laws that discourage employment because he has a lot of other goals for special interest groups in his party.

I'll agree that Romney's comment was stupid. I think Romney did a significant amount of damage to his chances of winning, too. However, I don't think that his basic point is wrong.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
