Had they been able to force a fumble and run it for a TD, couldn't they have tied it up? Using the, "hey, we did nothing illegal!" defense is pretty slimy if you have no hope of winning and just want to get in one last cheap shot, but if there's still a chance. . .*shrug*
There effectively wasn't. If they wanted a chance, they should not have stood aside on two plays trying to let the Giants score so they could get the ball back.
