Not liking either the Republican or Democratic candidates is not a valid reason for not voting, when there are actually SEVERAL OTHER candidates running, from such unknown political parties as the Green Party and the Libertarian Party.
People complain that the Dems and the GOP seem so much alike on too many issues, and bitch that we are a two party system. We aren't. We have dozens of political parties in the US.
If more people that don't like the D or R choices actually got off their lazy and uninformed butts and went to the polls, they could see there were more than 2 choices, and could vote for the "third party" that is closer to their beliefs. If this happened in larger and larger numbers, perhaps those parties might end up having a chance at getting candidates elected.
Not voting is Un-American. Not voting because you don't like either the Republican or Democrat, is not just Un-American, it is about the dumbest thing one can do in an election year.
Yes, there are others running, but if you are denying the existence of an effective two party system in the US then you are delusional.
Not voting is simply a form of protest by those who disagree with the effective two party system and there is nothing "Un-American" about that.
You say it would be different if those people just voted for a third party. Unfortunately, it just does not work that easily. These other candidates have nowhere near the money or media exposure (e.g., no debate invitations) and so your average person has no clue who the non-D/non-R candidates even are. And unless the SYSTEM changes, they will never have a chance.
So please, take your ball and go somewhere else with your "Un-American" accusations.
