(I don't really think voting matters, I can't say I see the US as a democracy. I just can't see it with things like the Electoral College. Maybe if I understood it better, but I dunno.)
The U.S. government system is not a democracy. It is a republic, or in other words, it is a representative democracy. Thus the electoral college.
Also, a republic != representative democracy.
A lot of the medieval/early modern period Italian city states were republics but did not approach a democracy. Similarly, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and a whole lot of other countries are constitutional monarchies which are also representative democracies.
