How important is handwriting?

Do you remember learning to write?
Yes.
At what age did you learn cursive?
Third grade? I remember long and dreary lessons. Copying it over and over. Useless.
Do you feel it is relevant in today's curriculum?
Nope. Get rid of it and teach people something more useful. Like computer programming in grade school. Start them early.
