It has been this bad since the election of 1796 (i.e., after Washington retired). Campaigns and politics were every bit as brutal back then when compared to today. Obviously, 24/7 news makes more people aware of it, but I think Friedman is ignoring history on purpose in order to make the point he wants.
In 1796 we didn't have people with enough free time and enough wealth (you can now follow politics devoutly regardless of wealth it doesn't matter you are poor, middle, or upper class due to the internet, newspapers, tv, etc) to follow politics with such religious fervor.
People now a days sometimes turn to politics as entertainment. It isn't about the issues and how it affects peoples lives, it is now about "sport teams" and "purity." You can't make a deal with the other side for you are then a RINO or DINO; and these "sportcasters" on either side will make sure you don't survive the primary.

No, it hasn't always been like this; I think Watergate changed it, and maybe Vietnam.
