They created sensless busy work to protect jobs and ended with our shop shutdown because it was so much cheaper to outsource. In theory I support the idea of unions. I dont support public sector unions atleast not ones active in politics but if America could reinvent its unions I might change my opinions worker councils might be a start.

Except that, you know, unions have a lot more power here. In general, anyway, in the car industry the difference's probably not that big.

And in the case of teacher unions ours might actually be a lot less powerful - a recent Economist article had some completely crazy statistics about the performance of a charter school compared to that of a public one it was sharing premises with (in Chicago, I think, or maybe NYC). Not that the teacher's union is the only difference there necessarily - parents who put their children in the charter school might just be more motivated and help them more - but surely it must be a big part of it.
