It most parts of America unless you are very well off you don't want to raises a family in a city. Since the majority of the more attractive employees live in suburbs s lot of the better jobs have more there. This makes for very decentralized metropolitan areas. I have told this isn't the way European suburbs.

In the US the suburbs are often bigger than the cities and typically much more liveable
