Using economic and diplomatic pressure to keep that zone of influence is all well and good but Russia does not seem to believe these countries warrant true sovereignty. Their per capita income is half of what the most western countries and the mean is closer to a third. They need to worry about fixing that not keeping their neighbors on short leash is some paranoid opium dream that the US is going to invade.
