The press loves him for the ratings but they have not treated him gently it is just that nothing sticks. He says so many stupid and offensive things they can't focus on just one and he supporters have proven that they will back him no matter what he says. If anything the more outlandish and over the top he is the more they love him.
It is losing strategy but it keeps him in the press.
