I am talking about how he monologues about how people are going to be all heroic and stuff like his character...but the cop on "Stranger Things" is the extent of his heroism. Mostly casting directors look at David Harbour and see "Smug douchebag" or "Rapist" or "Treacherous". And I think a case can be made that that is exactly why he was cast on "Stranger Things", which seems intent on subverting expectations. Two of the leading children are the most off-putting and repellent in appearance as I can recall seeing on TV, which their nemeses take the trouble to point out. Winona Ryder plays a deranged & obsessive woman who happens to be right in a stopped clock fashion, not because she is smarter than everyone else. The main teen characters are a creepy pervert stalker, a self-absorbed twit who is a horrible friend, and an entitled jock & bully who redeems himself at the last minute. Harbour was probably only cast as the good-guy cop to subvert the viewer's natural assumption that he is on the take or incompetent. When Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the small town sherriff or chief, you know the bad guys are not getting through his town in one piece. When David Harbour plays the same role, there are suddenly stakes, because you EXPECT him to die in horror-movie fashion, turn evil or turn out to have been evil all along, and when he doesn't, it feels like an underdog win.

View original postIt's one thing to come out and say what you want, but it is another thing entirely to cite what you pretend to be as if that is what you really are. Especially when you aren't Meryl Streep or Robert DeNiro, and your problem with Trump is far more likely to be audience envy. Which do you think is more likely to happen, among many other possible scenarios?
