I would have been very impressed if he had refused it. He could do it politely, and say something about how he doesn't feel worthy enough to stand alongside some of the past recipients, or he could have been frank, and told them that he did not approve of their obvious politicizing of what used to be a very honorable award.
By refusing it, the judges could get the impression that
a) He doesn't really care for the award
I'm sure he does, and he could make it clear in his speech that he does. It could even be argued that by refusing the award, he obviously cares more about it.
b) He thinks the selection committee has no idea what they're doing
They don't.
Either could cause him even more problems than just accepting it, as meaningless as it may be. I can just imagine the reaction of the Anti-Obama brigade if he turns down the prize.
Sure, the rabid Anti-Obama's would probably go wild, but I'm not sure what they could say. Making too big a deal out of it would draw attention to the fact that Obama won a Nobel Peace prize. I think that the average person would respect Obama more if he declined it.
Either way, I would have heartily backed my President on it. I know some parts of his speech seemed to hint at him doing nothing to earn this award, but he should have been more outspoken about it. Told them to stop giving out awards until they could find people who deserved them.
Like I said above, this probably won't go down well with the selection committee, and I think Obama has enough to worry about at the moment than to bruise some more egos.
Eh, the worst that happens is he never actually wins a Nobel Peace Prize. I mean, yeah, he'd bruise some egos, but frankly, no egos that could hamper him later down the line.
