It allows you to share text, pictures, and video in real time, with other people. It allows you to edit and change past messages, again, in real time. You can play back the wave like a movie, so that you can watch how the conversation progressed. The best way to describe it, really, is a collaborative wiki page that allows you to play back the change history.
