1. Do you have misgivings about getting into steel cans with wings and hurtling miles above the earth?

Yes. Especially after the time I watched lightning knock out an engine, the time I landed HARD in Shanghai into a monsoon after an approach that had the staunchest passengers gripping their chairs, feeling a Lufthansa 747 lose about 500-1000 feet in a dead air pocket over Newfoundland and taking off into a blizzard from Kazakhstan.

2. If you do, how do you distract yourself during the particularly horrible time called "takeoff?"

2a. Is takeoff not your least favorite time?

Landing is statistically much more dangerous.

3. Provide hugs and reassurance that this voyage, like every single one I've taken before, will not end in horrible disaster.

Probability says that you will reach your destination. Thousands of flights are performed safely every day.
