Sounds like you had the beginnings of a lucid dream. I've had them but bear in mind that the intensity can vary and they are hard to control and maintain.
The best ones are in some sense *better* than reality, because everything gets invested into a wonderful sense of mystery and atmosphere... just like stepping into a fantasy world. I've seen some absolutely gorgeous land-scapes when flying in my lucid dreams.
Couple of problems: the dream scape is too unstable, I've tried flying around Auckland (my home city) for fun but it usually degenerates into unfamilar and illogical scapes. Also, as soon it starts to approach the intensity of the actual waking world you .. usually wake-up, which is disappointing. It's also very hard to get lucid to start with... you have to learn to question the dreamscape (Am I dreaming? would this happen in reality?) and this can often get you started, but unfortunately it can also often simply mean you only have a dream in which you ask yourself 'Am I dreaming' without actullay managing to realize the correct answer
See if you can induce another lucid dream tonight. Remember, ask yourself over and over 'Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming?'. That's my best method but unfortunately I've never found a reliable way to induce them regularly.
