The Problem I Have With This Site Raserei Send a noteboard - 02/01/2010 07:57:59 AM
See, we're a reviewing website by nature, at least I imagine that to be our hope. But see, beyond the comments of "oh, that was some wicked bit of writing" or "oh, yeah I totally didn't see that coming," or "oh, yeah, he/she was totally hot" I don't feel that my opinion matters in changing the depth of the movie/book/show.

I could expound on thematic elements, character development, I suppose. I have the means, in that I possess a mind and fingers, computer and electricity, etc. Some say even my education could prove useful. But really, when I get down to it, I ask "what's the point?"

I suppose (though likely wrongly) you are wondering what has prompted this?

See, I was watching an episode of the Twilight Zone. It had William Shatner, some woman, Rod Serling in his gritty voice, and a machine with a Satan bobblehead. It told the future.

It had William Shatner act superstitious. Boy did he miss the mark. The woman was the voice of reason in the show. But the machine was the main character. As it tells their future for a penny a fortune, it warns of doom if they leave. When they leave early, they nearly die from a crazy motorist. Shaken, they return to the machine and ask more questions, the woman asking it falsified things like "when will I get married?" or (presumably) "how big is my penis?" with the machine wriggling out of each answer with a truthful response, though wryly wrought.

The point is, while Shatner obsesses and puts in penny after penny after penny after penny, the woman, his newlywed wife stands up and asks to go. Shatner ignores her, or asks "why?"

And she says "because it's telling your how to run your life, where to live, when to leave."

BLEW. MY. MIND.

See, that's the review I can muster. The Twilight Zone is known for that point in the show where suddenly the static of a magic eye turns into a sheep or surfer, where your vision is inverted and everything you were thinking is wrong and sullied. It was common for the twist, and some are better than others. Yet to reside solely on that seems far too common and adds nothing to a conversation, and at best makes the review seem lackluster.

This is the problem I have with this site. I do not meet it's expectations that I myself have imposed upon it.

I'm not sure what that is, but I'm fairly sure it's pretty messed up.

The episode is called "Nick of Time."
That's the whole trouble. You can't ever find
a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't any.
You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking,
somebody'll sneak up and write "F*ck you" right under your nose.
