namely, that gilbert played as though he slept through the team meetings. the fact that he made the game somewhat watchable in the second half is probably more to do with his coaches than his own preparation.
But this kid is a true freshman. I mean, how many games did he play in this year? How many snaps did he get? I mean, playing in practice is nothing compared to the actual game and the fact that he picked up so quickly is amazing. I don't think he slept through team meetings or anything. He was just inexperienced. If anything he wasn't given preparation enough. I mean... why wasn't there a more viable backup? One more experienced?
but i still think that he could have come out better prepared than he did. he pretty much looked like he had no idea which team was his until the 4th quarter. i will agree he was inexperienced, but maybe he'll get to prove that he belongs as the starter next year. in last night's game, he almost proved he wasn't even that good of a backup...
But getting tossed into a game suddenly? Not just a game, but a National Championship game? I mean I'd have been more worried if he had done well. Instead, he showed flashes of if not brilliance, but something a little extra special and showed that there was something to really look forward to next season. This will only make the kid stronger, I'm sure.
