Strange. All the comments in Times seem to badmouth the US. What's up with that ?
Couldn't tell you, but the Armenian genocide is literally the reason the term "genocide" exists. Geopolitics aside, I don't see why anyone would try to placate a country where calling genocide "genocide" is a jailable offense. Particularly in light of statements like these from their President:
"We are seriously concerned that this resolution approved by the committee despite all our warnings will harm Turkey-US ties and efforts to nomalise Turkey-Armenia relations. "
So if the world doesn't turn a blind eye to your mass slaughter of Armenia you won't be their friend? Um, maybe trying to exterminate the entire country was a bad way to start your "friendship. " Maybe insisting it never happened is a poor indicator of that "friendship. " Maybe efforts to sweep under the rug something that literally provided the inspiration to eyewitnesses who later engineered the Nazi Holocaust is an argument against Turkeys entry to the EU. Maybe if young German officers like Ludwig Maximilian Erwin von Scheubner-Richter hadn't witnessed over a million people killed for ethnic and religious reasons Hitler never dedicates part of Mein Kampf to him and starts his own genocide, but the point is we'll never know. In the years just after the Siege of Kosovo, is it really wise for the EU to admit a country that denies a genocide it perpetrated in service to the same centuries old Christian vs. Muslim hatred that produced the Siege of Vienna and the two bloodiest wars in human history?
Pardon me if the delicate TURKISH sensibilities aren't my primary concern here. Kudos to Berman for having the integrity to keep his political commitments, even if it might have been for pragmatic reasons, and shame on Obama for revoking yet another campaign promise. "Change" increasingly looks a lot like politics as usual (surprise, surprise.... )

How is denying the eponym's genocide improving relations with Armenia?

Modern Armenia looks at it rather differently than the diaspora does.

Whether motivated by religion or pure nationalism allowing genocide to be denied is a bad precedent.

It's been denied for eighty-five years. It can wait five more.

I agree. They just need to man up and admit it, apologize, and move on. *NM*
