The Arabs spell all sorts of stuff wrong, including "Alexandria" and "Jerusalem". The Turks have a similar problem with properly spelling (and pronouncing) Constantinople.
Libya is a GREEK name for the territory, which tells you that "y" is actually an upsilon. Other Greek toponyms with an upsilon include Lycia, Lydia, Palmyra, Smyrna, Bithynia et al.

What do you mean about Jerusalem? I mean, they don't use that word at all... Alexandria, yeah, but then Iskandar is just the Arabic version of Alexander.
