at least it is for me. If you are new to writing you may want to keep things simplier and stick the third person at first. Not that you ask for my opinion about that;)

There is a podcast called writing excuses that as a couple of episodes about tense and about writing form the opposite gender that you may find interesting. If you are going to start writing it is a good podcast in general to listen to IMHO. Orson Scott Crad also has a some nice stuff on his web page about writing.
