There is a power greater than Benedict/Ratzinger, a power greater than the pope on earth and that is called a Ecumenical council. When a Ecumenical council gathers they can change "the rules" of the church. The Ecumenical council in past has dethroned popes, and other times popes have been hold in line via threats to hold a Ecumenical council to dethrone the pope.
Now the victors write the history book, according to the Catholic church there has been never a pope that was "forced" out of the church. No they just "resigned" and a new pope was elected by the cardinals to replace him (for example the East/West schism, where there was 3 simultaneous popes, they weren't kicked out, no they resigned for the good of the church
)
I will let someone (such as Tom) explain more about the history behind this.
Well your version IS deficient. You claim that people should understand what they believe, so why don't you support your assertion that at the Council of Constance those resignations (and IIRC one of the antipopes never did resign, but claimed to be pope for the rest of his life) were NOT what they claimed to be? In fact there have been perfectly legitimate popes who opposed so-called councils that claimed authority over them and never gave in or accepted their authority. How can the "winners write the history books" argument be used to support your claim that the Popes & the advocates of Papal supremacy were sometimes defeated? If they WERE defeated, would not one of those victorious councils have promulgated the doctrine of Concilar Supremacy? How is that the advocates of Papal Supremacy got their version into the history books...unless they won, meaning the Pope IS supreme?

The Pope should resign and the Church needs to reform itself.
