I was trying to divide into general categories based on what I've seen. Players that I stomp couldn't keep a decent economy going. Players who usually beat me are the ones that always seem to get to techs before I do, and have counters for my stuff practically before I've decided what to do. 
And players I see in Youtube videos do crazy stuff like destroying an army with a reaper and a medivac.
Still, going a level above that, I'm sure you're right. Timing, "bare minimum defenses," and so on, are all vital, no doubt. Just to be ornery though, I'd say that in order to survive on just barely enough, you have to have great micro.
