PS3 was mainly for Blu Ray. I have found that I enjoy some PS3 only titles. Killzone 2, Grand Turismo 5: Prologue and I have bought Final Fantasy 7 from the playstation store.
I had the 360 first, so my game library is more extensive. I have found that I enjoy the games (that are available for both platforms) more on the 360. I don't know exactly why. Maybe because of the ones with online play I have more contacts on Xbox Live than I do on PS network. The Xbox live Gold will set you back some cash, where as the PS network is free to play online. If I were you, I would go with the PS3 first, simply for Blu Ray movies and the net work being free. Then later on if you want get a 360 go for it. They are both great systems. One final plug for the 360 should you choose to go that way, Netflix is nice on the 360. That is if you are a Netflix subscriber.
Whichever way you go...enjoy.

How many friends do you have with 360s and do you want Blu-Ray?

I probably have 5-6 friends with 360, and I don't care about Bluray

Microsoft have an automatic 3-year warranty on all 360s, so you should be fine.

PS3 Slimline is much cooler and quieter. Pretty much the exact same as a 360. *NM*

It sucks that the new ones don't do PS2 games anymore. Really lame of Sony to take it away. *NM*

Yeah, only the oldest of the PS3s play them, they took it away pretty fast. *NM*

Honestly I'd look at exclusive games and see which one fits you best

It does, but the main character is going to be Raiden, and I hate him with a passion

If you're also a PC gamer, I'd get the PS3. Less of its exclusives hit the PC. *NM*
