Like SVU and NCIS are both crime dramas, stylistic differences can remain under one genre umbrella. - Edit 1

Or at least it sounds good in my head. To the world at large, they're the same category. More discerning/nerdy folk like us are more acquainted with their differences.

I almost clarified that in my previous post, but figured people wouldn't nitpick. :D JRPGs do seem to be "watch cinematic with androgynous teens, grind, drink potion, expose how little sense Japanese pop culture makes to Westerners, watch cinematic, win" whereas Westerns are more "pick skill tree, grind, drink potion, was pseudo-philosophic, watch Tolkien-inspired ending cinematic, win." I generalize greatly here, but I think you're picking up what I'm putting down.

Despite loving them as a kid, I can't tolerate most JRPGs now. Both sub-genres are rife with same-y-ness.
