Yes, play ME1 first... but opinions vary about ME2. It did the most important things better, IMO. - Edit 1

As a preface: I'm somewhat of a PC snob, though I try not to be obnoxious about it. While they would be idiots to ignore this console generation, games like Oblivion have really suffered from developers being lazy about their PC versions.

There were certainly console concessions made for ME2, such as the lack of double-clicking in menus, etc. The overall game changes, however, felt more like the series finding its voice... not merely consolification. [sic] I rather prefer the way they're going, because it removed the awkwardness from the combat system. I also no longer have to keep selling my 20th Hurricane V shotgun to stay within my 150 item limit.

I love traditional RPGs too, but I really think ME2 was an overall improvement. Mass Effect seems best played as an interactive space opera with RPG elements, rather than a clunky shooter with inventory management. It had its shortcomings, just as the first did, but I regard it as a step in the right direction for that particular series. For Dragon Age 2, maybe not so much. But, hey... that discussion's been had several times here already.
