I was just a kid when I played the King's Quest, Police Quest, and Space Quest series (then high school for Hero's Quest and The Colonel's Bequest).
Whenever I got stumped I would call this friend of my uncle's who played PC games, but who I barely knew and ask him how to kill the Orat or escape from the whale's belly or whatever. Looking back I'm surprised he never hung up on me or acted rudely or anything, just answered my questions or offered a hint towards the answer.
I would play for hours and get nowhere because I didn't know the proper command or was unable to type it in fast enough. While frustrating at times, I loved those games!
