Myself and Cymbaline I think it was (is he still around btw?), spent many a post on the old Wotmania site prophesising the end of serious gaming, the end of onwership and the inevitable slide to online presence and the hooked in cash flow that entails. And this was just our response to DRM and Steam, but we could see a mile away where it was heading. I think the PSN hack beautifully illustrated my old point about how we shouldn't have to authenticate online, as many people lost the ability to even play the games they had bought for a month, single player in their own home ffs.

Online can be a great force in games, WoW changed my gaming life after all, but it has to be for a reason, and it has to be done responsibly, and no publisher will do that. Instead they see it as one giant cash cow, they see micro games on Facebook making money, and they will more and more ask why take the risk of a big budget development when we can punt out repeatable shite that people will pay for.

If it happens that way, and it's certainly heading there, I wont be happy I called it, I'll be sad.

Very few of those have anything to do with Steam, which you both recklessly conflate with DRM. - 07/06/2011 11:59:20 PM 690 Views
