for example, I'm relatively certain my dad's old Descent disks would run poorly on my computer. Whereas, I'm relatively certain that a "now" download would run much better. Also, CDs get scratched over time. I've bought multiple new hard copies of the Baldur's Gate series for the latter two reasons (I'm not the one who scratches the CDs. My brothers have atrocious CD habits and luckily I haven't had a single scratched CD since I moved out!)
Not to mention there's the perfectly good chance that you never owned the game, but played it when it belonged to someone else.

I bought Arch Rivals (NES) for $2.50 a few months ago. I'd say that's fair.
