I watched the first few minutes of the first episode on two separate occasions, but couldn't bring myself to go beyond that, I just found its appearance too dated.

Please don't lynch me or burn me at the stake.

Honestly, the first few minutes of the pilot is like the prologue of the the Eye of the World. It's kind of the backstory that sets the story for why things happen. I didn't find it great either, but the series picks up nicely, imo.
