For those who don't play- if an enemy takes over one of your countries, you get all of your soldiers back (usually just a few tokens), but one gets completely destroyed. You then put them back on the board at the beginning of your next turn.
However, the elves have an ability which means that none of their units are completely destroyed, so you can't really keep them down.
