So what is DOTA, actually? From what I've gathered it's some kind of RTS type thing, just particularly good/popular. Am I close to the mark?

I'd say you're close. It's a arts but focused on hero micromanagement, spell casting and team coordination/communication (5v5). It's not like SC2 where you have to manage an economy or play mostly 1v1.

It does take some time to learn as there are a lot of heroes/spells/items, but it's pretty enjoyable once you get the hang of it.
