The original warranty period was a year, right? And then in 2007, Microsoft gave the original warranty a 3 year extension, making it 4 years. Also, every warranty I've ever heard of starts at the date of purchase by the original owner. Not really sure what you're getting at with the other possibility you mentioned, but yeah.
