Ok, so having just finished the game, I figured I'd throw up a quick little review of the game, especially since I've seen a couple people that were thinking about playing it. The game has some definite good parts to it, and some areas where it felt rather lacking.
For the good, the voice acting was excellent. They hired some talented people to do the acting, and the script on the whole was decent. It wasn't the greatest ever, but it was pretty much what you would expect from a Star Wars story.
The story itself was quite well written as well, even though it was a bit formulaic. There wasn't exactly the open endedness to your character that many have come to expect from star Wars games since KoToR came out. You do get to level up your character, pick your light saber crystals, and pick and choose your force powers.
The area where the game really shines though, is in your control of the force and the environment. The physics engine they used and hyped so much is nothing short of excellent. The game rewards creativity, but doesn't require it. If you're more a brute force person, running ahead and hacking away at the enemies will get the job done just fine. However if you like to be creative, the game allows that. Some instances that jump out are the ways you can charge items with force lightning before throwing them, or in some situations there may be a force field separating you from your enemies....instead of taking the field down you can force grip them and throw them into the force field...instantly killing them. Simply put...they really did a fantastic job with the physics, and running around interacting with the environment is an absolute pleasure. (I will say that the implementation of Force Lightning is a bit overpowered in this game, it's too easy to just hit people with a quick bit of lightning to stun them for a couple seconds and then cut them down while they're stunned)
Now, the bad things about the game. It is glitchy. There are a number of areas on the map where a wrong move ends with you falling into the white nothingness that should be extremely rare to find. Some areas that by all rights should be flat enough to jump on you will hit and simply skid, even though they are placed in a way which would lead you to believe you are supposed to jump on them. The most annoying glitch though...was the camera. The camera has a mind of it's own far too often, and its mind is not that smart. There are times where for no apparent reason it will get stuck just a few inches behind your head, leaving you with no view of anything, no matter how you turn. Eventually it corrects itself, but for the short time when it's stuck it's quite annoying. The other problem with the camera is that there are spots in the game, where they have built in a fixed camera....it's usually a 2/3 overhead image, and it looks gorgeous, but it throws off the controls every time it does it. In that view you're left controlling your character in a manner that isn't the same way you've been doing so for the majority of the game. The best thing is....it usually does this for the boss fights, which makes them harder than they should be.
The only other issue I had with the game was the controls. They weren't terrible, they weren't even bad really. They just weren't great. The target lock mechanism was poorly implemented and often would result in you attacking in the wrong direction, or locking onto a piece of the environment such as a rock or random chunk of garbage. There wasn't enough freedom with the light saber controls, you basically have one button to mash to swing the saber. The force controls were OK, but seemed a bit counter-intuitive in spots. I'm not sure what would have improved them, but something about using the left trigger to pull a small menu up....just didn't really work for me. With small tweaks the controls could be fixed, and I suspect that they will address the issues in the next installment.
So...there you have it. It's not a perfect game, but it is a pretty fun game in spite of the flaws that I've listed. It may not have a high replay value, so it's perhaps something better off rented, but on the whole it's quite fun and worth the time it takes to beat the game.
