I had a nethack phase for about 6 months. The farthest I ever got was... pretty far. I was a wizard, and I got past that castle with the musical tune you have to play to open it. I had a pet DEMI-LICH (yay wand of polymorph on puppies!) I had awesome spells, rings, and everything.
And then I died. And I'd forgotton to do the "cheat" where you Ctrl-C your save file so you can load up. Just never got back to doing it.
That game is so good, though. It takes a while to get used to (very steep learning curve- you'll die on the first few levels a LOT before you get the hang of it), but when you do, you realize....

I always preferred Angband, pretty much the same game but based on Tolkien
