I agree - those reasons are why I give the game an overall 7 out of 10. It's not bad, and I think you could enjoy it, but I think some of the things that they got rid of were not replaced by anything more interesting, so there is a bit of a void left.
I really like battle systems, and didn't like how the game encouraged you to beat enemies so quickly for no good reason. Worse, I think the battle camera wasn't as good as it could be in terms of presenting a dynamic battle scene and I also didn't like now being able to order my characters into various formations. This game made me wish they had adopted FFXII's battle system where you and your opponents are on the same map.

The problem with the NPC's not doing stuff properly I didn't notice until very last stretch of game.
