Hard Choice but....
Mat all the way, example a: Gambit is French, hence not able to be slotted into the cool club easily. Gambit is a mutant, a genetic defect and while he has insanely good abilities he is still just a puddle of recessive genes. Mat on the other hand has genuine luck, memories of dead men and a really awesome weapon. He is also Captain(?) of the Deathwatch Guard e.g. totally super awesome. Not to mention X-Men is a comic book (albeit a killer one) but still never the less a work of fiction. Besides Gambits' armor is lame looking......FWEH

Being an X-mutant is not a defect, but you have the recessive part right. It is an evolutionary leap in the human gene pool, brought on by experimentation on the human race by Celestials at our emergence.
And Mat has genuine luck? What, pray tell, is that exactly? Mat's luck has nothing to do with actual chance, and more to do with the supernatural ability to bend probability (the Pattern) and a special gift as a ta'veren. He was born with it. That, to me, screams X-MAN!
Gambit can blow sh*t up by charging inorganic matter with kinetic energy. 'nuff said.
I'm not saying Mat is lame and Gambit, kooler. Just that both are relatively the same in character concept. Both are womanizers, gamblers, and highly skilled in wielding a stick. But Gambit can blow sh*t up with mere touch (while Mat is still waiting on his Illuminator). Just sayin.
