Three days later, the two men reached a small deserted town. Sharp edged mountains rose up on either side, so that the only way through was by the little village, but Segar did not think that was why the village had been constructed here. He tried not to gaze up those unnaturally smooth mountain sides, he thought he saw shattered building foundations jutting from the rock at weird angles.

Much of the village was in ruin too, rudimentary structures of wood and stone, such as had become more common near the end of the War, because they were simple to build from surrounding resources even though they were not as durable as proper buildings. The once merchant had no idea how long it had been since this village was abandoned, but pillagers had clearly been through since. Still, there might be some useful things left behind.

Suddenly Segar stopped, and with his head cocked slightly, pointed at one of the structures that were still standing - a tavern, he believed, though he could find any sign of its name. "I think there are still some people in there." There was some noise coming from within, anyway.
