Though I have to give a warning, I have never played any real RPGs, and my closest experience to pen&paper stuff is Neverwinter Nights 1&2 which are based on D&D. So complete newb in desperate need of help here.

Neverwinter Nights is actually pretty close to the real thing, as far as character creation goes.
