Late in the deliberations the phone rings, Mac answers it and waves at Luccio. She answers and then frowns, speaks, pauses, then listens for a moment and scowls.
"Hold a moment." She says into the phone before turning to face all of you and the hand full of other patrons. "I'm afraid I must ask all of you to leave for a little while, this is a private call and may take a while, and I may be meeting with someone here who would not wish to be known... go get some air, as they say, 'take a hike'."
A little taken a back, you rise and leave. The two wardens follow you out and trail you for a while to make sure no one stays nearby. When you return an hour later Luccio looks angry.
"Simply put, I have bad news. The first piece of bad news is that I and these wardens must leave at once. The second piece of bad news is that someone has just recently activated a fairly powerful and vicious ritual and our divinations indicate each of you has been named as part of it, as a player in the ritual, as have six items, one of which is now in my possession. I..."
"... Wait! What do mean named? Named for what?" One of you says.
"Simply put, someone has dusted off an old and nasty black magic ritual. It permits you to name a set number of players along with specifying certain items in proximity, usually items of significance, to serve as the channels for the ritual. You have a limited period of time to find all those items and perform the cancellation of the ritual or you will all die. However, whoever controls the ritual will have access to a serious amount of power when the ritual hits its peak. Anyone can cast it, if they are a player, even just one person, but if multiple people are there the majority will control it, and everyone involved will briefly be aware of every other player's mind. So if you haven't rooted out the conspirators by then, you'd likely know who they were, and they'd know you knew so if they had control they'd use the power of the ritual to kill you as you should do to them."
She sighs, "The only piece of goods news is that Warden Dresden will be returning before much longer, and he has a special talent for finding things. He has been told what is going on and is certain he will arrive before the deadline with enough time to track down any items you haven't found, or that get lost or stolen, the designated items can't be removed from the gameboard or destroyed and he'd likely be able to locate them and retrieve them in short order, but he can't use them or be part of the ritual as he is not a designated player. This is good, because the ritual is designed to unleash some very bad stuff if it is not canceled, likely hundreds if not thousands will die. That's the nature of the ritual, you see if a group of people want to use the spell they either have to be willing to die or designate other people as players who might not feel overjoyed at perishing and unleashing a vicious maelstrom in the process."
"This is very bad." Someone mutters.
She nods, "And it gets worse, you see, we think this may be the work of someone named Nicodemus Archleone, or one of his ilk, the Order of the Blackened Denarius, a vicious group of very powerful and very evil people. If not them, then possibly some necromancers, our divinations on the matter were inconclusive. Why they would designate any of you, as opposed to some random people they kidnapped off the streets, I have no idea. I have to go now, I've written down what I could while I waited for your return, hopefully it will help, good luck."
