If Widmore knows what Locke is then he can't think the mortars would hurt him. So would killing the candidates somehow stop Locke from leaving the island? I would think that killing the candidates would make it easier for him to leave. I don't understand who the mortars are suposed to threaten, unless Locke really cares about the people he has with him.
