Personally I think this is good news, Fox and Sci-Fi are just un-mixey things. And the rumours that they wanted to make Jack straight just put me right off the idea.
It looks like BBC are still looking to develop a US version and are now looking for a new partner (If it ends up anywhere I'd guess SyFy). Personally I think relocating the show to the states could be a great move, especially if Alonso comes with.
