I didn't care for that revelation. Jack estimated they had been dead about 70 years. Unless the island's power seriously messes with the rate of decomposition (which isn't impossible I guess), it's weird how Jack could be off by hundreds or thousands of years. I think this may be one of those things that was changed from what the writers/creators original intentions were.



Unintended side effect? Oddly enough, however it was he knew what he was doing, whoever turns the wheel does indeed leave the island and appear elsewhere in the world. Maybe both the operator and the island are dislodged from the point on Earth they occupy when the energies are unleashed.
